Medical genetics, once largely confined to relatively rare diseases, seen only by a few specialists is now becoming a central component of our understanding of most major diseases. Medical genetics includes studies of inheritance of diseases in families, the mapping of disease genes to specific locations on chromosomes, analysis of molecular mechanisms through which genes cause diseases and the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders.

About 50% of first trimester and 20% of second trimester miscarriages are due to genetic factors (either chromosomal imbalance, or single gene lethal mutations). Approximately 25-30% of all babies dying in the prenatal period do as a result of lethal congenital malformation. Increasingly, it is being recognised that genetic factors also play a significant role in causing malformations. Chromosome abnormalities, single gene disorders and multifactorial conditions account for at least 35% of all malformations.

This emphasises the importance of the correct diagnosis of the baby and offering prenatal diagnostic surveillance to mothers who have previously had an abnormal infant.
