Intrauterine fetal blood transfusion is a life saviour in case the blood group of mother is Rh negative and baby is Rh positive. In such conditions, mother produces antibodies that destroy the baby’s blood and, as a result, the fetus develops anaemia.

  • Amnioinfusion, it is performed in case of severe oligohydramnios, the condition in which the volume of amniotic fluid is inadequate for gestational age. It is helpful to identify structural abnormalities in the fetus.
  • Amnioreduction, it is used to combat the highly dangerous situations such as, when the amniotic fluid is too much around the baby during pregnancy. So, the excess water has to be reduced.
  • Fetal reduction, it is a procedure given as an option for patients with multiple pregnacy. Risk of preterm delivery is more when the number of fetuses is more than two. To avoid this, one of the fetuses is removed to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
  • Intrauterine shunt procedures – when excess fluid compresses and damage organs like heart, lungs and kidneys of the fetus, a hollow tube (shunt) is inserted through a mother’s abdomen and uterus into fetus to drain fluid from fetal space into amniotic cavity.
